We Officially Suck
It's official: the United States is less enlightened than the nation which brought the world Apartheid.
On November 30, South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal declared that the opposite-sex, common-law definition of marriage in that country is unconstitutional. South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution bans all discrimination based on sexual orientation.
USA #1!! USA #1!!
And Christians wonder why people want to run the fuck away from them.

Apartheid, separate but not even equal. Gotta love the retrograde civil rights concepts. Sometimes I think the republicans miss the Klan. That's where their slippery slope stared.

"Queer apartheid?"
Huh. Never thought about it that way before. There's a new take on it.

Enlightened isn't where you are, it's where you're headed.
150 years ago, blacks slaves. 100 years ago, second class citizens. 50 years ago just receiving full civil rights. Today, Secretary of State.
Women have made similar progress from chattel, to voting citizens, to kick ass Senators and maybe on day President.
What's so depressing is that Gay Rights had been moving forward B.W. (Before W). I really hope we don't have to do the Apartheid thing, or the Nazi thing, or the Red Purge thing to get back on track.

"The US is less enlightened"? Holy crap! The US was once enlightened?! Did I miss a memo or something?!?

Well, the Founders were one of the first--if not the first--to write down on paper the idea that "all men are created equal"

New Zealand has legalized civil unions. Canada seems about to legalize gay marriage. European nations move in that direction.
The United States continues its drift in the opposite direction ... WHY IS IT SO FUCKED UP?
